Director Todd Haynes rightly perceives that it doesn’t really matter who or what Dylan really was. As an artist, he doesn’t owe us anything but his songs, distilling and chronicling American society and culture. Dylan’s music pervades each and every inch of this movie, always hovering like a phantom in the background…sometimes taking over the stage and driving the inter-cutting, entangled storylines. Six supremely talented actors get into six different personas of Bob Dylan, presenting a kaleidoscope of color and music, a partial picture but an enthralling panorama.
