Lights seen by survivors under, on, or around the water at the time of the tragedy have been attributed to a German submarine. Some have speculated that a German U-boat launched a torpedo attack on the Titanic, despite the fact that the First World War had yet to begin. This possibility has since been dismissed as survivors described the collision with the iceberg as simply sending a mild shudder through the vessel which is in stark contrast to what a torpedo hit would feel like.
