Self-organized networks foster a tactic of diversity and independence. They give users the tools to create content, promote material and discuss topics. Such networks (like digg, stumbleupon, bloggingzoom, etc) do not interfere with the user interaction.
They practice a form of indirect control (blocking spam, improper behavior, multiple accounts, etc) to let the community evolve. But when the social network develops a group of authorities, who control the community, who has the upper hand?
Are the users the ones defining the network or is it the network itself?
