The Sound of the Loon

Some great photos of this magnificent duck and a link to the best audio I have ever heard of the calls it makes. Loons are plentiful in Black Lake, NY. They are large beautiful birds and I have heard their calls at all different times of the day but it is especially eerie at night. They are found in North America and Northern Europe where they are called divers. This is because they dive under the water to catch fish. It is not uncommon to see a loon disappear for minutes at a time only to surface 50 feet away!
