Viennese waltz is the oldest of the standard ballroom dances and developed in the early 19th centuary from the early Austrian folk dances and polkas. It is danced in close hold to a fast tempo: think Strauss waltz. The English or Modern Waltz was developed from the Viennese to suit much slower music but still with the distinctive 1-2-3 rhythms with the feet closing on the 3rd beat
