I’ve never been able to get into heavy metal music, and the annoying hard rock ring tone on my son’s cell phone drives me insane.
He’s tried to get me into some of the bands he and Don Jamieson like, but some of those 1990s metal bands are just awful. You’re never going to convince me that Megadeth, System of a Down, Korn or Nine Inch Nails are worth a bucket of spit (or bat’s blood). Oh, I forgot Cradle of Filth … now there’s a lovely ringtone I can’t live without!
Still, despite Don Jamieson’s efforts I know that everyone has always looked down on metal. Although early heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, they were critically reviled at the time. And of course, it’s never just been about the music. In addition to its sound and lyrics, a heavy metal band’s image is expressed in album sleeve art, stage sets, the clothes of the band, band logos, and music videos.
