Seagate told us months ago about their Momentus 5400 PSD hybrid notebook hard drives. These little units come in 80, 120 and 160 Gig capacities and are equipped with a piddly 256 MB of flash for the most commonly accessed OS files. These drives are marketed as being for Windows Vista, but anything that’s good for Vista will be even better on every other OS in existence. Heck, DOS and Windows 3.11 on one of these hybrid drives (with lots of partitions, of course) would be lightning fast. However, the main reason I’m looking for one of these drives is Ubuntu’s inability to stop using the hard drive.
I’ve done some digging through Yahoo and discovered that these drives have an estimated street price of $190 USD. Considering the strength of the US dollar, I’d be a fool not to capitalize on the opportunity. These units have apparently been on the market since June but, try as I might, I can’t find them anywhere. So where the heck are the hybrid hard drives? Where are the flash-only hard drives, for that matter? It seems that these technologies are on the market, but not available anywhere.
