Mary Carillo love of sports, specialy tennis, come from the fortuitous proximity of her childhood home in Queens, New York, to the Forest Hills tennis facility, home of the U.S. Open until 1978. Mary Carillo attended as many matches as possible as a spectator, even persuading her mother to allow her to skip school to see the finals. In 1971, Mary Carillo watched Chris Evert play in the semifinals, an event that inspired her to change her goal from “just wanting to play for fun” to becoming a professional tennis player herself. May Carillo then dicided to devote herself to training at the Port Washington Tennis Academy, where John McEnroe also studied, and reached the professional ranks near 1977.
