Bull-baiting existed as far back as 1209 and the English Bulldog was used for baiting bulls. This required the Bulldog to creep upon its belly toward the bull. In anticipation, the bull would lower its head ready to defend itself by tossing the dog with its horns. In a split second the Bulldog would leap and grab the bull by the nostrils. It was believed that this exercise built up lactic acid in the animal. Therefore having an effect of tenderising the meat and giving it a satisfying flavor.
In the early years, an English Bulldog weighed 90 lbs. up until 1686 through 1735 there was a reduction in size to 50-60 lbs. The English Bulldog is extinct today.
There are breeders that are attempting to recreate this extinct breed with some success. However these recreations are not the old English Bulldog because the genetics are extinct.
