Slap Shot is the oldest movie in the list thus far and, to be honest, it looks like the oldest movie in the list thus far. From the fashion and hairstyles to the look and feel of the film itself, you realize that this flick takes place in the decade that brought us Pet Rocks, mood rings and Welcome Back, Kotter (which, during its early years, was a great TV show). However, you also realize something else - you are watching comedic gold. Simply put, Slap Shot is hilarious.

This movie was a real departure for its “star,” Paul Newman, who gives a solid (and funny) performance as the Charlestown Chief’s’ player/coach. What’s that? Why is “star” in quotes? Because the real stars of this flick are those in the supporting cast, especially the Hanson brothers, who have an affinity for aluminum foil and toy racetracks. Oh, they also love hockey (all three played hockey professionally) and still make personal appearances for hockey and Slap Shot fans alike.

This is another flick that may have ranked higher in my list had I seen it more than a few times. That being said, it might be the greatest sports comedy movie of all time. Just don’t tell the Hanson brothers I said it “might be.” OK?
