Superficially the US is still very well off, but there are signs that the less fortunate are not only not catching up, they are increasing and getting further behind. $4 gallon gas is still a bargain compared to the rest of the world, and the store shelves are still full of high quality food and goods. But is the belt-tightening that most people talk about going to be enough to get through a recession, or are we heading for a full blown depression?
