It's fun to see native birds like these great blue herons thriving in a disappearing habitat and making the best of introduced vegetation. In this case the higher foliage of the exotic pine may be more protection from intrusion by humans and predators like raccoons. The number of nesting pairs and possible chicks indicates that the surrounding waters' fish stocks are also improving, providing enough food for the birds' survival.
