Long tail keywords are, as the name suggests, usually phrases of several words. It is a term originally coined by Chris Anders of The Long Tail. One of the great things in them is that very few websites will match them exactly, so ranking high for them is much easier, even with a brand new site.

This screenshot is from some of the search phrases used to find this site through Google within one week, specifically some of those keywords that were only used once during that time. I think it illustrates the concept of long tail keywords quite well.
