The term University Wits is applied to a group of scholars, who wrote in the closing years of sixteenth century. The group included Christopher Marlowe of 'Doctor Faustus' fame, Thomas Kyd and others. The Wits in a way set up a precedent for Shakespearean drama. They did not blindly follow the classic Greek or Roman drama as was the tradition at that time. They only used it as a model but showed their ingenuity by remodelling the frame.
