Should Contests Run Your Blog?

Should contests be running your blog?  I'm sure most of you don't realize what contests are doing to your blog, but the majority of you still do it.  After the launch of Entrecard, I've noticed that people are starting to create blog contests left and right, but it's actually destroying a person's blog rather than to increase readership.
